[Brussels, 17 January 2014] The European Women’s Lobby is launching a European Week of Action on the week of the 27 of January to support the women in Spain and the abortion right in Europe. In Brussels, together with other European and Belgian NGOs, the EWL is co-organising a demonstration that will take place on the 29 January 2014, at 17h, in front of the Spanish Embassy. Many other actions will take place in Europe.
On 20 December 2013, the Spanish Council of Ministers approved a draft bill aiming at reforming the current law on sexual and reproductive health and rights. If approved, this new bill would lead to a 30 years step backwards in the rights of women and the failure of the Government to fulfill its fundamental role to promote gender equality and human rights.
Spanish Women’s organizations are joining forces in a big mobilization called “The train of liberty” that will take place during the day of 1st of February. Women’s Organisations from different regions in Spain and also from Europe will travel to Madrid and will bring a Manifesto to the Spanish Government (you can read here the Manifesto in English).
In order to support the women in Spain and, in general, the right to abortion in Europe, the EWL together with the European Humanist Federation (EFH), the Platform “Abortion Rights” and and the International Planned Parenthood Federation – European Network (IPPFEN)are co-organizing a demonstration on 29 January 2013. The demonstration will start at 17h in front of the Spanish Embassy and, from there, will go together to the European Parliament.

The EWL will also send a Letter to the President of the Spanish Government and the Minister of Justice calling them to withdraw the draft bill, to listen to the demands of the women´s rights NGOs and to take into account the general opinion of the Spanish population: according to a recent opinion poll by Metroscopia, 86% of people consider that a pregnant woman should have the right to freely decide on her pregnancy.
EWL members and partners organizations are invited to also participate in this European Week of action to support women in Spain and the abortion right all over Europe.
