4 years overdue!

Let’s call on the EU decision-makers to #DeliverNow! Join our demonstration in Strasbourg on Tuesday 21st October!

[Brussels, 14 October 2014] 4 years ago, on 20th October 2010, the Maternity Leave Directive was successfully adopted by the European Parliament in first reading. It was then blocked in the Council with the excuse that the timing was not right, due to the economic crisis. The European Commission threatened to withdraw the Directive in 2014 in the name of ‘red tape’, as if it was not relevant anymore.

We invite you to make your voice heard to make sure that the Maternity Directive is back on the European political agenda again!

You are cordially invited to mark the 4th anniversary of the adoption of the Maternity Leave Directive by the European Parliament on Tuesday 21st October 2014 in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, from 14:00 to 15:00, and show your solidarity for women in Europe.

Let’s demonstrate together to show our European leaders that it is time for better maternity rights for all women in Europe!

  • We call on the new European Commission, in particular Commissioners-designate Vera Jourova and Marianne Thyssen, to keep the Maternity Leave Directive on the agenda.
  • We call on the Council of the European Union and the EU Member States to engage and move forward in negotiating with the European Parliament, to make their official position known, to support a robust Maternity Leave Directive to ensure that all women in Europe have equal rights

If you wish to deliver a speech during the demonstration to support the adoption of the Maternity Leave Directive, please contact Jessica Machacova, Policy Officer at the EWL Secretariat (Machacova@womenlobby.org / 0032 2 210 04 28).
