The EWL welcomes the outcomes of the MEP Awards

[Brussels, 24 March 2014] On 18 March, the 10th edition of the MEP Awards took place, awarding MEPs for their work over the last legislature. The European Women’s Lobby (EWL) would like to congratulate all Members of the European Parliament, who have been awarded for their valuable work.

Especially, the EWL would like to congratulate Ms Lunacek (Austria, Greens), for her award “outstanding Contribution”, and especially her unconditional support to parity democracy and LGBTI rights. The EWL would also like to congratulate Edite Estrela (Portugal, S&D) for her tireless support to women’s rights and gender equality, especially in the field of “Employment and Social Affairs”, but also regarding women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Outstanding Contribution:Ulrike Lunacek: Greens/EFA, Austria: "Fear and scaremongering have to become a thing of the past. Gay and lesbian people sometimes are still afraid to walk in the streets hand-in-hand with their loved ones".

Employment and Social Affairs: Edite Estrela: S&D, Portugal: "I dedicate this award to all women, especially those who are victims of violence and suffer discrimination and women in my country of Portugal who are suffering from austerity measures"
