[Brussels, 21 August 2012] Support the call of the Global Justice Center for abortion right for all women victims of rape in armed conflict!
On 14 August 2012, the Global Justice Center has sent an open letter to the EC Commissioner Georgieva, Commissioner for Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response urging that EU humanitarian aid must comply with International Humanitarian Law.
On May 30, 2012 ten members of the European Parliament had submitted written parliamentary questions to the European Commission on the US “no abortion” restrictions affecting EU humanitarian aid. In her answer, Commissioner Georgieva avoids the subject of the US ’no abortion’ clause applied to humanitarian aid.
GJC’s letter to EC Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva not only requests clarification but closes with 4 specific asks to ensure that girls and women raped in armed conflict are provided with the right to terminate their pregnancy resulting from the rape.
Write to the Commissioner and ask the EU to take the lead to ensure that girls and women raped in war are accorded their full rights, including when needed, abortions in humanitarian aid settings. In particular you can support the letter of the Global Justice Center and ask the European Commission to:
• Amend its Framework Partnership agreement to require that EU partners providing assistance for war victims ensure that women impregnated by war rape are provided with the option of abortion as part of comprehensive medical care.
• Take steps to insure the segregation of EU funds from US funds in accord with paragraph 61 (1) of the European Parliament Resolution of March 13. 2012 on Equality between women and men in the European Union.
• Set up a special review committee with EU member states representatives to consider the legality of the ICRC anti-abortion policy under the Geneva Conventions and its Additional Protocols.
• Fully answer the Parliamentary Questions submitted by MEPs on May 30, 2012 with respect to the denial of abortions for women raped in armed conflict.
Thanks in advance for your support!
