Spain: “Deciding makes us free” Campaign for Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Rights

[Madrid, 27 May 2013] CELEM is one of the 270 Spanish organizations members of the “Deciding makes us free” Platform, which include a wide variety of associations: women’s organizations, trade unions, professional, social and health organizations, etc. This platform defends sexual and reproductive Rights of Spanish women, currently in danger of disappearing in our country.
According to a public communication of the Spanish Minister of Justice, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, the Spanish government is preparing one of the most restrictive laws on voluntary termination of pregnancy in the western world. Indeed, the current law that provides legal periods for an abortion will be repealed, and the legislative framework will return to a law based on assumptions, even more restrictive than the law of 1985, in which women won’t have the right to decide, but it will be the doctors or other professionals who decide for them. It will also eliminate the possibility of interrupting pregnancy when fetal malformation exists.
This is a return to a past of ultraconservative ideology and religious moral that we thought outdated, where Spanish women have two options: to have an abortion out of Spain if they have the financial resources to do so, or to have an abortion in Spain under clandestine conditions with consequent risk on their health and their life.
For these reasons, the “Deciding makes us free” Platform has launched a campaign against the reform of the current Law on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy. In this campaign 53 celebrities of our country are involved: actresses, singers, politicians, writers and journalists, such as Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Miguel Rios, Martirio, Ana Belén, Gaspar Llamazares (IU), Elena Valenciano (PSOE), Pepa Bueno, Julia Otero, Almudena Grandes, Gran Wyoming, Ignacio Fernández Toxo (CCOO), among other celebrities who lend their image and voice to a video explaining “Who are the women who have abortions?”, “Who will be affected by the hardening of the current law announced by the Government?”
Each character says a phrase or a word about women who have abortions: "They are teenagers. They are adults. They used contraception. Or didn’t use. They are married. They are girls. They are widows. They are alone. They are accompanied. They had sex education. Or they never talked about sex with anyone, etc". An original way to show, in little more than two minutes, that there is no typical profile of the women who voluntarily interrupt their pregnancy. The popular party’s parliamentary group (in the government) is trying to convey an image to Spanish society that women who choose abortion are uneducated illiterate women... like if it were a decision due to a lack of education.
The video, in addition of being distributed on Spanish social networks and in Latin America, will be also broadcasted in English and French internationally.
CELEM collaborates in this campaign by disseminating the video on its website www.celem.org and its social networks in support of the current Spanish Law on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy.

CAMPAÑA DE “LA PLATAFORMA DECIDIR NOS HACE LIBRES”, A FAVOR DE LOS DERECHOS SEXUALES Y REPRODUCTIVOS DE LAS MUJERES
CELEM es una de las 270 organizaciones del estado Español, que conforman la Plataforma Decidir nos hace libres, y que agrupa a asociaciones de todo tipo, desde organizaciones de mujeres a sindicatos, entidades profesionales sanitarias o sociales. Dicha Plataforma defiende los Derechos Sexuales y Reproductivos de las mujeres españolas, actualmente en peligro de desaparecer en nuestro país.
Según el ministro de Justicia Gallardón ha ido trasladando a la opinión pública, el Gobierno Español está preparando una de las leyes de Interrupción Voluntaria del Embarazo más restrictivas del mundo occidental. Para ello, derogará la actual Ley de plazos con la vuelta a una Ley de indicaciones, incluso mucho más restrictiva que la ley de 1985, en la que las mujeres no tendrán el derecho a decidir, sino que serán los médicos u otros profesionales quienes decidan por ellas. También eliminará la posibilidad de interrumpir el embarazo cuando exista malformación fetal.
Esto supone una vuelta a un pasado de ideología ultraconservadora y de moral religiosa que creíamos superado, donde las mujeres españolas tengan dos opciones, abortar fuera de España si disponen de recursos económicos para ello, o bien abortar en España en condiciones de clandestinidad con el consiguiente riesgo para su salud y su vida.
Por estos motivos, la Plataforma Decidir nos hace Libres, ha lanzado una campaña contra la reforma de la actual Ley de Salud Sexual y Reproductiva y de Interrupción Voluntaria del Embarazo. En dicha campaña participan 53 personas famosas de nuestro país, actrices, cantantes, políticas, escritoras y periodistas, tales como Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Miguel Ríos, Martirio, Ana Belén, Gaspar Llamazares (IU), Elena Valenciano (PSOE), Pepa Bueno, Julia Otero, Almudena Grandes Gran Wyoming, Ignacio Fernández Toxo (CCOO), entre otros famosos que prestan su imagen y su voz a un video en el que se explica ¿Quiénes son las mujeres que abortan? ¿A quienes afectará el endurecimiento de la Ley actual anunciado por el Ejecutivo?
Cada personaje dice una frase o palabra sobre las mujeres que abortan:
“Son adolescentes. Adultas. Usaron métodos anticonceptivos. O no los usaron. Están casadas. Solteras. Viudas. Están solas. Acompañadas. Tuvieron educación sexual. O jamás hablaron de sexo con nadie, etc.” . Una original forma de evidenciar, en poco más de dos minutos, que no existe un perfil tipo de la mujer que interrumpe voluntariamente su embarazo.
Desde el grupo parlamentario del partido popular en el gobierno, se está intentando trasladar a la sociedad española que las mujeres que deciden abortar son mujeres analfabetas sin estudios... como si fuera una decisión tomada desde la falta de formación de la persona
El video, además de difundirse en español en las redes Sociales de nuestro país y en América latina, también se difundirá en inglés y en francés internacionalmente.
CELEM, colabora en esta campaña dando difusión del video en su página web www.celem.org y en sus redes sociales, en apoyo a la actual Ley española de Salud Sexual y Reproductiva e Interrupción Voluntaria del Embarazo.
