Apart from working on European legislation on equality between women and men, the EWL has been also actively following and lobbying for the adoption of anti-discriminaiton legislation on all other grounds covered of Article 19 of the TFEU (ex-article 13 TEC) i.e. racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation. The EWL has been working in this regard with the relevant anti-discrimination networks through the Social Platform towards the adoption of a strong Directive following the European Commission proposal in July 2008 for a new anti-discrimination Directive covering age, disability, religion and sexual orientation.
In EWL work against discrimination, we pay particular attention to the multiple or intersectional discrimination experienced by some women due to their ethnic origin, their religion or belief, their disability, their age and/or their sexual orientation. Therefore, any measure aiming at tackling discrimination on a given ground should integrate the gender dimension, i.e. take into consideration the specific needs of women.
