    Social and employment experts believe the EU’s 2020 plans still do not go far enough in pushing for a Europe of solidarity and sustainability, though some felt there were slight improvements on previous drafts.

    Reacting to Spanish EU presidency plans aimed at adopting a new EU law aimed at tackling gender violence, European Women’s Lobby secretary general Myria Vassiliadou told the Parliament Magazine that the Brussels-based organisation was "very supportive of the Spanish presidency and what they are trying to do".

  • Cooperation among all stakeholders to fight against discrimination in EU

    The third Equality Summit focusing on Cooperation for Equality opened in Stockholm on Monday. Representatives from governments, human rights institutions, the business sector, the media and NGOs are gathering to discuss how to strengthen cooperation to combat discrimination.   • Wednesday’s news: politicians push for Mary Robinson, and Women’s Lobby organises a demo

    The European Women’s Lobby (now a supporter of our campaign) organised a protest in Brussels today. You can see the photos of the event on Flickr.
    The Parliament also reports that a cross-party group of MEPs is urging Mary Robinson to reconsider rejecting the idea to become President of the European Council. Vaira Vike Freiberga’s name remains in the runing for that post.

  • A new anti-discrimination directive proposed at Equality Summit

    A new directive protecting against discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, religion or belief and sexual orientation in all areas of life has been proposed at the third Equality Summit started here on Monday.
    "Article 13 of the EU Treaty is proposed to have the same scope and the same level of protection as the Race Equality Directive 43in 2000 and should be adopted by the European Council," said Member of the European Parliament Emine Bozkurt at the summit.

  • Yes, Mrs President?

    Gender equality is being taken increasingly seriously in the hunt for a new European Union president. Ahead of next week’s summit to appoint the new full-time chair of the European Council, the Schuman Foundation promoting European ideas is sounding out public opinion.   • Despite efforts, Turkey falls in gender gap ranking

    Although Turkey has passed much legislation and tried to implement policies to close the gender gap, the recent Global Gender Gap Report 2009 published by the World Economic Forum ranked the nation 129th out of a total of 134 countries in terms of equality between men and women.
    Furthermore, Turkey has continued to fall in the rankings: It held 105th place in 2006, was 121st in 2007 and 123rd in 2008. This year, only Saudi Arabia, Benin, Pakistan, Chad and Yemen ranked lower then Turkey. (...) Read more

  • Hunt continues for women to fill top EU posts

    European Commission President José Manuel Barroso this week called for EU leaders to nominate more women to his next EU executive, as one of the main female candidates for the new Lisbon Treaty top jobs, Mary Robinson, said she was unavailable for consideration.
    Alongside nationality, geography (North-South, East-West), the size of the country and political affiliation, gender can also be seen as a criterion when European leaders horse-trade over top EU jobs. According to the European (...) Read more
