16 Days of activism to end violence against women: Actions of EWL European Members

[Brussels, 13 December 2017] From the 25th of November, the International day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to the 10th of December, the International Human Rights Day, the European Women’s Lobby and many of our members engaged in several campaigns and activities to take action and raise awareness during the 16 Days of activism to end violence against women. Please, see below the actions taken by several of our EWL European wide members: the European Disability Forum’s Conference on Ending Forced Sterilisation, the European Network of Migrant Women conferences on women and girls migrant and refugees, Soroptimist International of Europe "We Stand up for women" campaign; Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom fundarisng campaign for their work to estop violence; and the World Associciation of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts ‘Girls are unsafe’ campaign.

European Disability Forum, EDF

On the 5th December, theEuropean Disability Forum organised a hearing on “Ending forced sterilisation of women and girls with disabilities” at the European Parliament. EWL Executive member, Laura Albu represented the EWL at this meeting. More information can be found here..

European Network of Migrant Women, ENoMW

In Copenhagen on the 24th November, the European Network of Migrant Women and Women Refugee Route organised the Conference “Istanbul Convention and the Universal Rights of Female Migrants”. The panels will tackle the violence and discrimination migrant women face and analyse the role the Istanbul Convention can play in protecting the universal rights of all women. On 7 of December in Brussels, ENOMW organised a conference on "How Europe takes forward Refugee Compacts - A Girl Child Perspective". Anna Zobnina, ENoMW Strategy & Policy Coordinator, presented the Network’s insight on how a girl Refugee Child perspective have been neglected by policy makers.

Soroptimist International of Europe

Soroptimist International of Europe carried out the "We stand up for women" campaign during the 16 days of activism to end violence against women and girls.

Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, WILPF

On 25 November WILPF organised a 1-day campaign highlighting some of the root causes of violence. WILPF opened a fundraising platform to get support WILPF work for peace, using existing international legal and political frameworks to achieve fundamental change in the way states conceptualise and address issues of gender, militarism, peace and security.

World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, WAGGGS

WAGGGS Girls Are Unsafe banner

WAGGGS has partnered with UN Women to deliver the ‘Girls are unsafe’ campaign. Girls and young women all over the world to draw hearbreaking pictures of the places and spaces where they believe girls and young women are most unsafe in their communities. The information gathered will help to support local, national and international advocacy and action to end violence against girls.
