EWL looks back on inspiring seminar in the EP in Brussels ’My MEP is Just Like Me?/!’

[Brussels, 21 February 2014] Last Tuesday, February 18, the European Women’s Lobby organised a seminar on gender equality and diversity in European political life, hosted by MEP Claude Moraes.

The EWL would like to thank all panellists for their participation and contributions to the main event of the 50/50 campaign “No Modern European Democracy without Gender Equality”.

Among others, US Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez and Brussels politican Zakia Khattabi called for more women from ethnic minorities to run for political offices. Scholar Petra Meier advised politicians to put gender equality and diversity high on the agenda and MEPS of the 50/50 campaign’s Core Group Ulrike Lunacek, Zita Gurmai and Sirpa Pietikänen as well as Antoniya Parvanova and Claudette Abela Baldacchino shared their experiences and insights. The seminar also provided the chance for mentees of the EWL Political Mentoring Programme Guliz Tomruk, Sanchia Alasia and Kamilla Sultanova to present themselves and the main points of their campaigns. In a third panel civil society organisations ENAR, ERGO Network and ILGA-Europe stressed the need for all minority groups to be represented on the European political level.

Over a hundred people attended the seminar and pictures can be found on our flickr-page. An analysis about the outcomes of this seminar will be published on our website and in this newsletter next week.
