Former UN Under-Secretary-General launches appeal for ’doable, fast-track indicators’ for the implementation of UNSCR 1325

Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury, Former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the UN, calls for new action to implement Resolution 1325.

In March 2000, during Anwarul K. Chowdhury’s first Presidency of the Security Council and at his initiative, the concept of a United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) emphasizing women’s equal participation in the peace processes was accepted by the Council with the agreement of all members. This was the first time in the UN’s 55 year history such action was taken by the Security Council.

On 27 July 2010, Mr. Chowdhury presented a keynote address on the genesis of of the UN Security Council resolution1325 and a global perspective on its implementation at the working meeting in Washington DC organized at the United States Institute of Peace along with three other organizations. This event is seen as a curtain raiser for a bigger event later in the year closer to the Security Council’s ministerial level meeting on the 10th anniversary of UNSCR 1325 this year.

At that meeting, in addition to presenting the genesis of 1325, Mr. Chowdhury also launched his own, what he calls, "doable, fast-track indicators" for 1325 implementation basically highlighting what pro-active steps could be taken immediately by the UN Secretary-General and the UN system without waiting any longer and prolonging our agony and frustration over the very slow implementation during last 10 years.

At the meeting there was a general enthusiasm for such practical and realistic set of indicators. And, subsequently a number of NGOs came up with suggestions for integrating these indicators in their own programmes and activities for 1325.
