MEPs dicuss violence against women and women’s rights in transition processes

[Brussels, 10 October 2012] Two committees of the European Parliament joined forces to address crucial issues of violence against women and women’s rights in transition processes, on 09 October 2012 in Brussels. The Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) and the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) organised a joint session to share knowledge and strategies in order to promote women’s rights in and outside Europe.

Invitation of Rashida Manjoo, UN Special Rapporteur On Violence Against Women

In association with the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly, the DROI and FEMM committees invited Ms Rashida Manjoo, UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, to present her latest report to the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

The 2012 report of Ms Manjoo addresses the topic of gender-related killings of women.

Presentation of the study on universal standards for women’s rights during democratic transitions

The study analyses the recent developments related to the Arab Spring. Both committees have been active in following up and reporting about the Arab Spring, including its consequences on women’s rights and gender equality.
