UK: EWL members put the abolition of prostitution on the agenda
[London, 15 February 2013] A member of the European Women’s Lobby, the National Alliance of Women’s Organisations, NAWO, is organising its Conference following its Annual General Meeting, to be held on the 28th February at Europe House, Smith Square, London, SW1P 3EU, from 2.45pm to 4.30pm. Entitled ’A Europe Free from Prostitution’, the conference will aim at discussing the issue of prostitution and trafficking for sexual exploitation in the UK and Europe.
Chaired by well-known journalist and NAWO Trustee, Julie Bindel, speakers of note will include Pierrette Pape – leading the European Women’s Lobby Campaign on prostitution, Ann Hamilton – Development Director of the Human Trafficking Foundation, the Mayor’s Office and the MET special police unit SC&O.
NAWO will then invite Members of the European Parliament to sign the Brussels’ Call “Together for a Europe free from prostitution” at a ceremony to take place following the conference, with a photocall and a press time.
The Brussels’ Call was initiated by the European Women’s Lobby, Fondation Scelles and Mouvement du Nid France, got support from 200 women’s rights NGOs and was unveiled on 4 December 2012 during the EWL’s European conference on prostitution in the European Parliament in Brussels. The call urges European Member States to work towards abolishing prostitution; taking urgent action to do so via prohibiting purchase, introducing preventative measures, working to promote education in gender equality and ‘positive sexuality’, and creating exit programmes for those in prostitution.
