WAGGGS partner with UN Women in global campaign to stop violence against girls

[Brussels, 16 August 2011] Girls in every country across the world are being subjected to many forms of violence – this is wrong and must stop. Girls have the right to live free from violence and the fear of violence. They need to be aware of their rights – and find the voice to create a global movement to end violence.

EWL member organisation, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, is partnering with UN Women as part of our campaign to ‘Stop the violence. Speak out for girls’ rights’.

The World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts and UN Women will create a non-formal education curriculum which will empower girls and young women to understand their rights and develop the skills and confidence to claim these rights for themselves and others.

This is the first global curriculum of its kind to address the issue of violence against girls and young women and we will be aiming to pilot the programme in at least 20 countries by the end of 2012.

“Violence against women is a gross human rights violation and UN Women recognizes the urgent need to focus on girls and young women who are often at the frontline of this pandemic. Therefore we have partnered with WAGGGS on their campaign, and in support of their innovative international badge curriculum, which centres on fostering girls’ activism and leadership in the global struggle to end violence against girls and women. This is a top priority for UN Women and a strategic step towards prevention and ending violence against girls and women.”, said, Ms. Lakshmi Puri, Assistant-Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director, UN Women.

UN Women also offers a wealth of resources and information on the issue of violence against women and girls. You can find out more by visiting their virtual knowledge centre, or you can take their online quiz. The ‘Stop the violence’ campaign will also feature on UN Women’s ‘Say NO - UNiTE’ platform. Say NO – UniTE to End Violence against Women’ is a global online platform that records advocacy efforts from around the world and collects actions to end violence against women and girls.
