EWL Observatory on Violence Against Women Meets in Brussels

[Brussels, September 12 2018] The European Women’s Lobby (EWL) Observatory on Violence against Women (VAW), came together in Brussels for two days to discuss burning issues on VAW and to develop our working priorities for 2019.

The EWL Observatory on Violence against Women is a unique structure in Europe which brings together a dynamic group of women from more than 30 countries in Europe (professionals, women’s rights defenders, front-line NGOs activists, etc.) with outstanding experience and expertise in different forms of male violence against women. In 2017, the Observatory celebrated 20 years and marched through Brussels to demand, Loud and United, a end to all form of male violence against women. You can watch the video of the event here.

On September 10, Experts came together to discuss several crucial topics and to highlight the the important work of the Observatory over the last year. Including joint actions in collaboration with the European Coalition to end VAWG and the high-level Loud & United conference "Istanbul Convention: What policies transform commitment into reality?"

The Observatory also discussed and strategised on the growing opposition to the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combatting Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, the Istanbul Convention. Working on strategies on how to come together in support and solidarity to combat this anti-feminist movement.

On the second day of the meeting, the EWL Observatory on VAW met with Google Brussels to discuss how to tackle online violence against women; analysing how to provide female politicians, activists and service providers with the right knowledge and tools. The session acted as a follow-up to the impactful EWL #HerNetHerRights project of 2017. You can find out more about #HerNetHerRights and read the report here.
