EWL and partners organise side event at CSW on MDGs, prostitution and the most vulnerable women and girls

[Brussels, 21 February 2014] In the framework of the 58th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the European Women’s Lobby, CAP International, Apne Aap and the European Network of Migrant Women organise a side event on "Reaching out "the last girl": MDGs, prostitution and the most vulnerable women and girls", on Tuesday 11 March 2014, 12h30-14h (Hardin Room, Church Center United Nations (CCUN), at 777 United Nations Plaza, New York).

The priority theme of the 58th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will be “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls”.

Over the last 20 years, the MDGs have proven to be insufficient in terms of transformative effect with regards to the situation of women and girls all over the world. The European Women’s Lobby, CAP International, Apne Aap and the European Network of Migrant Women strongly believe that the post-2015 development framework must effectively guarantee the full spectrum of women’s rights, and propose measures to concretely leave no one behind, especially the most vulnerable.

In the current context of globalisation and neo-liberalism, the issue of prostitution is at the core of the inequalities between women and men: the system of prostitution makes the most of male domination, economic and social vulnerability, and discrimination against minorities. The organisers therefore want to address this issue, from the perspective of the most vulnerable women and girls, in different continents, to feed into the discussion on the post-2015 development agenda. The side event will be a unique opportunity to hear from women’s organisations from minority or migrant women’s groups in Europe, North America and Asia, about their reality when it comes to prostitution.
