Colette De Troy, Director of the EWL Observatory to co-chair Equality Now board of Directors

(Brussels 24 May) We are happy to learn that Colette De Troy, Director of the EWL Observatory on violence against women, has been nominated co-chair of the Board of Directors of Equality Now, a worldwide-recognised and effective women’s rights organization.

Founded in 1992, Equality Now advocates for the human rights of women and girls around the world by raising international visibility of individual cases of abuse, by mobilising public support through a global membership, and wielding strategic political pressure to ensure that governments enact or enforce laws and policies that uphold the rights of women and girls. With offices in New York, Nairobi and London, presences in Amman, Jordan and Washington D.C, its areas of focus include Discrimination in Law, Sexual Violence, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Trafficking.

For many years the EWL has cooperated with Equality Now, from lobbying on the UN Protocol on trafficking, to actions on sexual violence and rape, not to mention the Afghan Women Summit in the European Commission and European Parliament!

Colette will co-chair the Equality Now Board of Directors together with Sue Smaley, Professor Emeritus of UCLA. We are convinced that, by adding this new position to her role as director of the EWL Observatory on VAW, Colette will further develop cooperation between the EWL and Equality Now to strengthen actions to promote women’s rights and fight against discrimination and violence against women.

We would like to wish Colette every success in her role. For more information about Equality Now, please see their website here.
